Message From the Managing Director, Mr. Lim Chai Kiui
In retrospect, the economy of Singapore in the past 2 years mimick that of a roller coaster. While things were still looking rosy throughout 2008, the economy suddenly turn for the worse from 2009. By mid-2009, Singapore was officially in a recession.
Fortunately, continual adherence to prudent financial control by our directors coupled with unweaving support from our customers and hard work put in by our company's staffs have enabled us to tide through this "coaster" relatively well thus far. With Singapore still developing and progressing, growth is expected in the transportation and logistics industry. With this simple concept in mind, it was decided that Kim Soon Lee would continue its "expansionist" policy, as in previous years.
In the transportation wing, Kim Soon Lee invested a whopping 5.5 million dollars from mid 2008 to mid 2009, in the purchase of new vehicles and equipment to replace as well as to add on to its ageing ones. By mid 2009, Kim Soon Lee's total fleet of vehicles include 100 units of trailers, 75 units of lorry cranes, 50 units of prime movers, 10 units of 1.5 to 3 tonne trucks and 10 units of forklifts. Indeed, such fleet would rank as one of the biggest among its parallels in the industry. Of special mention among the above would be the purchase of a 5 axle multi axle modular trailer, capable of transporting single load of more than 100 tonnes, as well as the one-off purchase of 3 units of 75 tonnes lorry cranes, the biggest in capacity in Singapore to date.
Additionally, the above purchases have also enabled Kim Soon Lee to possess one of the youngest vehicle fleet in the industry. Half of all our vehicles now are 4 years old or younger. This move, though costly, is pivotal to our company's service commitment, i.e. to cut down the down time of our vehicles and to fulfill the more stringent demands customers have on the quality of vehicles at sites.
In its logistics and property wing, Kim Soon Lee successfully bid for a 2.5 acre heavy vehicle park at Toh Tuck in April 2009. This vehicle park shall serve as a base for the parking, dispatch as well as repair of vehicles and trailers stationed in the west. Inevitably, this shall further enhance our level of services in the Jurong/ Tuas area. With this, Kim Soon Lee now possess 3 bases, namely Eunos, Bedok and Toh Tuck, from where vehicles can be conveniently dispatched and maintained.
Looking ahead, we expect Singapore's economy to remain in doldrums throughout 2009 and perhaps in 2010. Kim Soon Lee shall relentlessly keep up with the ever rising standards and requirements of the industry by investing in newer and bigger equipment. Efforts will also be made to upgrade the skills of our staffs. All these, it was hoped, will propel the company to meet or even exceed the expectations of our customers and enable Kim Soon Lee to remain in the forefront of the transportation industry.
